During a root canal or other dental procedure, the tooth's soft pulp is removed. Blood vessels, connective tissue, and nerves make up the pulp, which supports tooth development. A general dentist or endodontist will typically perform a root canal while you are under anesthesia. A root canal is performed when the pulp, the soft interior of a tooth, is injured, inflamed, or infected. The tooth's crown, which is the part that is visible above the gums, can still be intact even if the pulp is dead. The pulp that has been damaged or infected should be removed in order to protect the tooth's structure. Getting hit in the mouth can injure a tooth; the pulp can still be damaged even if the injury does not crack the tooth. Deep decay from an untreated cavity, multiple dental procedures on the same tooth, a chip or crack in the tooth, and injuries to the tooth are other common causes of pulp damage. Pain in the tooth, swelling and a warm sensation in the gums are the most common symptoms of pulp damage. Your dentist will examine the painful tooth and take X-rays to confirm the diagnosis. Your dentist might suggest an endodontist if they determine that you need a root canal.
