The melanin pigment acts as a protective mechanism, preventing further cell damage from UV radiation. Melanin is piled on top of the nucleus of the cell, like an umbrella; this process occurs in all skin cells exposed to sunlight. As a result, tanning is visible on the exposed body parts.
